Message from the Chief
Welcome to our website! We are happy to bring you news about the District and most importantly to assist you in your time of need.
Fire protection was first developed in this northern Jefferson County Community in 1941. We were known as the Rock Community Volunteer Fire Association. For almost 30 years a group of dedicated men and women provided their skills and abilities to combat fires, rescue people injured in car crashes and help during medical emergencies for absolutely no pay. Funds were obtained through fundraisers, selling peanuts in the penny peanut machine and selling “fire tags”. It wasn’t until 1970 when these members asked the voters to approve the formation of the Fire District and pay a property tax to supply the needed funds.
Your firefighters are constantly being trained in the latest techniques for emergency medical care, fire suppression, along with technical rescue and extrication. They stand ready to safely do “Whatever It Takes” when they are called for assistance.
Firefighters enjoy their jobs like no other profession. How many children ask their parents and grandparents "can we go see the fire trucks"? They don’t say that about doctor visits or parent teacher conferences very often. You can rest assured our firefighters are there to show them everything they would care to see in a fire truck. The children will come home with fire safety coloring books, stickers, badges and hopefully a safety message they have learned.
Firefighters assist people with child passenger safety seat installations, safety demonstrations, and what to do if you have a fire in your home or if your clothes catch fire. Fire prevention training is offered to our senior residents and also for special needs children. Our firefighters visit the schoolchildren in hopes of showing the children what a role model looks like and to encourage the very best from every one of them. Firefighters assist school children with everything from reading books to planting trees.
Firefighters give directions to countless numbers of people who are "lost". They assist people who might not know just where to mount a smoke or carbon monoxide detector. Maybe the detector just needs a new battery and aren't sure what to do or what kind of battery is needed.
It might be easier to answer what a firefighter “doesn’t” do for the people of the community they serve. Our firefighters have assisted with a wide variety of situations including a deer caught in a school yard fence, child's hand in a vending machine, rings stuck on fingers, handcuffs without keys just to mention a few.
These folks do "regular" stuff too! They wash trucks, mop floors, cut grass, clean windows, paint, repair tools and appliances, dust furniture, vacuum floors and wash dishes. About the only difference between you and a firefighter is they get to help people in some way everyday. That's what it is all about with firefighters, helping people, and they love it!
I hope our web site helps you better understand what services the District provides. The men and women of the Rock Community Fire Protection District are continuously seeking innovative ways to improve and to provide exceptional service to our community.
I encourage and welcome your ideas and comments. Please feel free to email me.. Please take the time to visit any of our five fire stations. If you have any questions about the District or if you are interested in any safety courses or services we provide please contact us at 636-296-2211.
